Detroit Thurs 16th May - Day 1 Minus 1

The flight was about 12:00 to Detroit and we made it with seconds to spare.
Arrived in hotel and Boley had a nap.
I went for a short walk to find the venue for tonight's gig. 2 hours later, I found it.
At first I thought that Detroit was like Castleford on a good day. Later, I realised that wasn't true. It makes Castleford look like Miami.
To say it is "run down" is an overstatement. On the walk to the gig, I passed nothing but derelict factories and apartments.
The gig was at The Majestic which is a restaurant/bowling alley/bar and concert hall.
I arrived about 5:30pm and found out that the Cobras weren't on until 9pm. So I had a few beers, rang Boley and he arrived about 6:30pm.
The Majestic is really cool. It is a very old concert hall, with no seats and two bars at the back of the hall. It is famous for being the place where Houdini died. He was on stage and challenged a member of the audience to hit him in his stomach as hard as they could. He subsequently died of internal injuries. Having seen the size of some of the yanks, I think I would have chosen a little old lady to hit me. They are ENORMOUS!
Again, like Chicago, the people of Detroit are really friendly.
It seemed like all the cool people in town had come to the gig. The women were so cool and sexy (sorry Max).
Everyone we speak to thinks we are Australian.

The Detroit Cobras:
I won't do a full review of the gig (just yet), but let's just say they were GREAT!
Not in a "mega band" sort of way, but they play great music and Rachel Nagy has probably the best voice of any contemporary band.
I saw her in the bar earlier in the evening and am kicking myself for not speaking to her.
She is really pretty, like Debby Harry in her prime, and she sings with more soul than Amy Winehouse.
The rest of the band were exceptional.
The lead guitarist, Joe, played great rock n roll licks and Maryann played great rhythm.
The bassist, Gina, is new to the band. We met her after the gig, and she told us that this was her first gig with the Cobras. She plays great bass and looks sooooo sexy.
The drummer  was there too!
I took loads of photos and spent most of the time filming on my camera. Vids n photos to follow...........but here's one:

After the Cobras played a band called X played. Speaking to John & Jeff (Hi!), they told us that they were really big in the late 70's/80's. They were good. Played a rockabilly style punk. Great guitarist.
When the gig had finished, me n Boley and half the audience, went to The Old Miami. We were told to catch a cab. We could have walked it in 2 minutes. Even the cab driver thought that we were stupid! When I asked him how much for the fare, he said "I Dunno, pay what you think it's worth". So I gave him 3 dollars (£1.50) for 2 minutes fare!
The Old Miami was like Cosmos in Leeds................"ROCKIN"
We got kicked out at 3 am which was probably a good things coz we had to be up at 7:30am for DAY 1

As any woman would tell you, 5 inches is not enough but maybe it's better than nothing at all!!

Kev
Why don't you ever say that I am so sexy. Are those Cobra girls really better than me. You thought one of them was butch didn't you?!
I had a good night out and feeling a bit tired today. went to the gate at 8, Elliots, Priory, Harry's, O'Ds (were we saw a Thin ~Lizzy tribute band for a while and the singer looked just like Phil Lynott, now he was sexy. oh and Richard was there but he's not sexy) and ended up in Havanna. It was a nice little threesome.
eleanor has been to the retreat at Ilkley today and we have to go to mass tomorrow, parents and sponsors.
Nicole wants to go to a gig in Leeds in the hols while you are away. I don't think it will happen.
Detroit sounds fab but you don't have to take me there

Hey Kev and John,

How's the road trip going? It was great meeting you both at the Detroit Cobras concert last Thursday. Sounds like you had a good time. We certainly did.

The Cobras were better live than I expected. They sounded very tight as they made their way through several Cobra classics. I must agree with you: Gina is, as you might say, "one fit bird." ;) Very cool that you got to meet her and the drummer after the show.

X was great but they sounded better in Chicago. I saw them in March. It just seemed like Exene's mike was too low towards the end.

Here's a bit on X if you wanted to read it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_%28U.S._band%29

Jeff and I actually met the guitarist Billy Zoom after the show. He was walking around with a glass of red wine signing autographs and having his picture taken with fans.

By the way, let me know when you post those pictures of the Cobras. I'd love to see them.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Cheers,

John

Hi John,
Nice to hear from you
I will post the Cobras photos & vids asap but we are struggling to keep up with the driving & have very little time to update this blog.
I've only had time to watch 1 vid but it looked good.
Will be in touch later.
